Senior Patrol Leader


Senior Patrol Leader

Serving as Senior Patrol Leader can apply towards Positions of Responsibility requirements for Star, Life, and Eagle.

Job Description:

The Senior Patrol Leader is the youth head of the troop. All other youth positions report to him, directly or indirectly. He is elected by the troop's youth members as a whole, usually to serve a 6- or 12-month term.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for troop’s overall operation and leader of the troop.
  • In charge of troop meetings, Patrol Leaders’ Council, and all troop activities - to include the annual program planning conference. 
  • Appoints other troop junior leaders with the advice and counsel of the Scoutmaster.
  • Assigns duties and responsibilities to junior leaders.
  • Helps each patrol be successful
  • Assists the Scoutmaster with junior leader training.
  • Sees that the troop runs in an orderly and timely manner.
  • Presides over the Patrol Leaders’ Council.
  • Voting member of Patrol Leaders’ Council. 
  • Leads troop in all activities.
  • Works with Scoutmaster to effectively run troop.
  • Starts phone tree calls when directed by Scoutmaster
    • Calls patrol leaders to notify their patrols
    • Calls ASPL to notify the junior leaders
    • Calls Scoutmaster when troop phone tree complete
  • Sets a good example.

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader

Job Description:

The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader is the second highest-ranking youth leader in the troop. He is appointed by the senior patrol leader with the approval of the Scoutmaster. The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader acts as the Senior Patrol Leader in the absence of the Senior Patrol Leader or when called upon. He also provides leadership to other youth leaders in the troop. He is appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader under the guidance of the Scoutmaster.

Responsibilities:

  • Helps the Senior Patrol Leader lead meetings and activities (see SPL description).
  • Runs the troop in the absence of the Senior Patrol Leader.
  • Helps train and supervise the troop Scribe, Quartermaster, Instructor, Librarian, Historian, and Chaplain Aide.
  • Attends and serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders' Council and is a voting member. 
  • Provide training and direction for TQM, Scribe, OA Rep, Historian, Librarian, and Instructor.
  • Calls junior leaders on phone tree when directed by SPL -- calls SPL when junior leaders phone tree complete. 
  • Sets a good example.
  • Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform.
  • Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.
  • Shows Scout spirit.

Patrol Leader

Job Description

The Patrol Leader is the elected leader of his patrol. He represents his patrol on the patrol leaders' council. He appoints an Assistant Patrol Leader.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans and leads patrol meetings and activities.
  • Keeps patrol members informed.
  • Assigns each patrol member a specific duty.
  • Encourages patrol members to complete advancement requirements
  • Responsible for all patrol checked out equipment
  • Maintains patrol flag and ensures all members know patrol yell.
  • Appoints patrol leadership positions (Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Scribe, Patrol Quartermaster, Patrol Grubmaster, and Patrol Cheermaster) in agreement from Scoutmaster
  • Represents his patrol at all patrol Leaders' Council meetings and the annual program planning conference.
  • Voting member of Patrol Leaders’ Council
  • Prepares the patrol to participate in all troop activities.
  • Works with other troop leaders to make the troop run well.
  • Calls patrol members on phone tree when directed by SPL -- Calls SPL when patrol phone tree complete
  • Knows the abilities of each patrol member.

Job Description:

The Assistant Patrol Leader is appointed by the Patrol Leader and leads the patrol in his absence.

Responsibilities:

  • Helps the Patrol Leader plan and steer patrol meetings and activities.
  • Helps him keep patrol members informed.
  • Helps the patrol get ready for all troop activities.
  • Represents his patrol at patrol leaders' council meetings when the Patrol Leader cannot attend.
  • Sets a good example.

Troop Guide

Troop Guide

Serving as Troop Guide can apply towards Positions of Responsibility requirementss for Star, Life, and Eagle.

  Reports to: Assistant Scoutmaster in charge of new boys

Job Description:

The Troop Guide works with new Scouts. He helps them feel comfortable and earn their First Class rank in their first year.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides direction, coaching, and support for patrol leader and new scouts.
  • Guides new Scouts from harassment by older Scouts.
  • Coaches the patrol leader of the new-Scout patrol on his duties.
  • Works with the patrol leader at patrol leaders' council meetings.
  • Attends patrol leaders' council meetings with the patrol leader of the new-Scout patrol.
  • Assists the Assistant Scoutmaster with training.
  • Counsels individuals Scouts on Scouting challenges.
  • Attends Patrol Leaders' Council and is a voting member. 
  • Sets a good example.
  • Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform.
  • Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.

Quartermaster

Job Description:

The Quartermaster keeps track of troop equipment and sees that it is in good working order. He keeps records on patrol/troop equipment, makes sure equipment is in good working condition, and issues equipment and makes sure it is returned in good condition.

Responsibilities:

  • Troop supply and equipment boss.
  • Keeps records/inventory of patrol/troop equipment.
  • Makes sure equipment is in good working condition.
  • Works with patrol QMs as they check out and return equipment
  • Issues equipment and makes sure it is returned in good condition.
  • Reports to Patrol Leaders Council on equipment in need of replacement or repair, makes suggestions for new or replacement items.
  • Works with the Assistant Scoutmaster responsible for equipment.
  • Sets a good example.

Scribe

Job Description:

The Scribe is the record-keeping and financial officer of the troop.

The Scribe keeps the troop records. He records the activities of the patrol leaders' council and keeps a record of dues, advancement, and Scout attendance at troop meetings. He attends the patrol leaders' council but generally is not a voting member.

Responsibilities:

  • Troop secretary
  • Attends and keeps a log of patrol leaders' council meetings and keeps a logbook of discussions. 
  • Records attendance of Scout and and adult leaders at meetings, service projects and outings.
  • Maintains troop advancement records
  • Works with troop committee
  • Sets a good example.
  • Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform.

Instructor

The Instructor teaches Scouting skills.

Responsibilities:

Librarian

Librarian

Job Description:

The Librarian oversees the care and use of troop books, pamphlets, magazines, audiovisuals, and merit badge counselor lists.

Responsibilities:

  • Sets up and takes care of a troop library.
  • Keeps records of books and pamphlets owned by the troop.
  • Adds new or replacement items as needed.
  • Keeps books and pamphlets available for borrowing.
  • Keeps a system for checking books and pamphlets in and out, and follows up on late returns.
  • Set a good example.

Bugler

The Bugler should be able to make appropriate bugle calls, as requested, at troop activities.

  • Plays "Reveille" and "Taps" at appropriate troop outings. 
  • Is highly encouraged to  earn the Bugling Merit Badge

Leave No Trace Trainer

Leave No Trace Trainer


The Leave No Trace Trainer specializes in teaching Leave No Trace principles and ensuring that the troop follows these principles on outings. He can also help Scouts earn the Leave No Trace award. He should have a thorough understanding of and commitment to Leave No Trace. Ideally, he should have completed Leave No Trace training and earned the Camping and Environmental Science merit badges.

Order of the Arrow - Troop Representative

Job Description:

The Order of the Arrow Troop Representative is a youth liaison between the local Order of the Arrow (OA) lodge.

Position Description:

The Order of the Arrow Representative is a youth liaison between the local OA lodge. He coordinates service opportunities, Troop elections, camp promotions, and inductions within the Troop with the local OA lodge. He may request lodge resources to help meet the needs of his Troop.

In his Troop, he helps meet the needs of the Troop and will serve as a communication and programmatic link to and from Arrowmen, adult leaders and Scouts who are not presently members of the Order. He will do this in a fashion that strengthens the mission of the lodge, purpose of the Order and the mission of the Boy Scouts of America. By setting a good example, he will enhance the image of the Order as a service arm to his Troop.

Qualifications:

He must be a registered member of the Order of the Arrow in good standing with both the Lodge and the Troop.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a communication link between the OA lodge and the troop.
  • Promotes the OA in the Troop
  • Encourages year round camping and resident camping in the Troop.
  • Encourages older Scout participation in high adventure programs.
  • Encourages participation of older scouts in actively participate in community service projects.
  • Assists with leadership skills training in the Troop.
  • Encourages Arrowmen to assume leadership positions in the Troop.
  • Encourages Arrowmen in the Troop to be active participants in the lodge activities and to seal their membership in the Order by becoming Brotherhood members.
  • Regularly attends troop meetings, troop campouts, and troop events during his service period.

Webmaster


Webmaster

  Reports to: Scoutmaster

The troop webmaster is responsible for maintaining the troop’s website. He should make sure that information posted on the website is correct and up to date and that members’ and leaders’ privacy is protected. This position is responsible for the main means of troop mass-communication. This position is appointed by the Scoutmaster and is guided and assisted by adult supervision. A working knowledge of basic internet and website tools are necessary to perform this important communications position.

Responsibilities 

  • Follow the guidance of the troop website oversight committee
  • Maintains troop website with the guidance of the troop website oversight committee. Coordinates with Committee Webmaster, troop scribe, and historian to ensure all relavant documents, pictures are posted in a timely fashion. 
  • Ensures website information is up to date and correct and protects adult and scout privacy
